A Fly on the Wheel, or How I Helped to Govern India by Thomas Herbert Lewin

The memoir of Lieut.-Col. Thomas Herbert Lewin, Deputy Commissioner of the Hill Tracts and author of ‘Wild Races of South-Eastern India’, written late in his life and first published in 1912. Lewin recounts arriving in India as a young officer, his posting to the Chittagong Hill Tracts when Chandraghona was still its headquarters, the years he spent learning the hill languages and travelling the Karnaphuli and the Kassalong, his dealings with the Bohmong and the Mong Raja, and his part in the Lushai campaign. It is the first-person counterpart to his ethnographic books — the same country and the same people, seen from inside the administration that was taking hold of them.
