A History of Chittagong, Volume One (From Ancient Times down to 1761) by Suniti Bhushan Qanungo

The first volume of Suniti Bhushan Qanungo’s history of Chittagong, from the earliest times down to the cession of the district to the East India Company in 1761. Part One opens with the land and the people — geography and configuration, the historical boundary, the origin of the name, and how the country shaped the character of those who lived in it — then turns to the racial heritage of pre-Aryan Chittagong, its Aryanisation, what the classical writers of the West recorded of it, and its political history down to the Muslim conquest, with appendices on Rahmi of the Arab geographers, the medieval principality of Ramu, and Paukera; a further chapter covers religion, Chittagong as a centre of learning, and the evolution of the Chittagong dialect. Part Two follows the independent Sultanate — the Ilyas Shahi, Husain Shahi and Afghan periods, the administration of the Sultanate, and Portuguese activity from 1516. Part Three covers the intervening Arakanese regime and its administration. Written by the author while in the Department of History at the University of Chittagong, and dedicated to the people of Chittagong.
