A History of Chittagong, Volume Two (1761-1947) by Suniti Bhushan Qanungo

The second volume of Suniti Bhushan Qanungo’s history of Chittagong, carrying the story from the cession of the district to the East India Company in 1761 through to 1947. It opens with land and people — the changing boundary of the district, including the years in the early 1770s when a large part of the subjugated area of the Chittagong Hill Tracts was united with it, and the later separations of Tippera, Sandwip and Noakhali. Later chapters trace the evolution of the administration under the successive British experiments in statecraft and the Cornwallis code; the four communities of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians and the religious reform and social change of the period; the Independence movement and political activity; and the growth of Chittagong town from the 1860s into a modern city. Qanungo drew on government reports, contemporary newspapers, statistical accounts, district gazetteers, census reports and travellers’ accounts, many of the local histories being no longer available.
