Volume VI of W. W. Hunter’s survey of Bengal, covering the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Chittagong, Noákhálí, Tipperah and Hill Tipperah. The volume opens with the Hill Tracts, setting out area and boundaries, history, jurisdiction, mountains, river system and river traffic, fisheries, minerals, forest produce and wildlife, then turns to the people — population from the Census of 1872, the ethnical division of the inhabitants, and their villages, houses, food, occupations and material condition — before doing the same for the three plains districts. Compiled principally by H. M. Kisch of the Statistics Department and published by Trübner & Co. in 1876, it is among the earliest systematic descriptions of the Hill Tracts in print.
