Chakma Resistance to British Domination 1772-1798 by Suniti Bhushan Qanungo

Suniti Bhushan Qanungo, Professor of History at Chittagong University, on the twenty-six years of Chakma resistance to the East India Company. The book runs to seven chapters: the first two on the identity of the Chakma land and people and on their own administrative system; the third on the British policy that gave birth to the resistance; the fourth and fifth on the struggle for independence; the sixth on the establishment of colonial rule in the conquered area; and the seventh on the investigation into the resistance movement. Qanungo argues that the occupation of Rangunia and the attempt to impose political and economic settlements on the Chakmas brought on the fight, that it was a struggle to keep their independence and territorial integrity rather than the rebellion the English writers took it for, and that the Chakma king and senior officials led it themselves. Published by the author at Kanungopara, Chittagong, in 1998, and dedicated to the Chakma freedom fighters against British imperialism.
